Email Behind the Walls

The Behind the Walls Mail-in Reference Services program offers written responses to requests for general information from Library patrons who are currently incarcerated. Reference letters can include a wide variety of topics ranging from pop culture to job readiness tools.

To provide the best service possible, please be aware that:

Only one reference question is allowed per inmate on a monthly basis.
No more than five (5) pages of information can be sent in each response. As a result, we may not be able to send all the information that is requested.
We cannot contact a third party or send any mail on behalf of the inmate.
No legal advice will be provided.
No adult materials will be provided, including images and text, and the names of companies that produce adult materials.
No information promoting violence, the use of weapons or the purchase of weapons will be provided.
Requests for books, magazines and newspapers must be made to the Prisoners Literature Project, c/o Bound Together Books, 1369 Haight St., San Francisco, CA 94117.
Pen pal requests are not allowed.
No private information of an individual is provided, but information about public organizations, including non-profits or businesses, will be provided.
Maps and directions are not provided.
